Anyone can now have solar on the Big Island

Shared Solar let’s you see savings on your HECO electricity bill

Benefits of Solar for Everyone

We’re developing two 2.5-MW* community solar farms for any HECO customer on the Big Island – even renters – to split the savings.

No need to purchase your own solar panels or even own a roof.

No sign-up, transfer, or cancellation fees.

What is Shared Solar?

Shared solar, or community solar, allows members of the community to split the benefits of a single solar installation without owning it. The solar electricity is delivered to the local utility grid and subscribers to the program get energy credits from HECO, as if the solar panels were installed on their property.

Participants pay a subscription fee to cover the installation and operations of their portion of the shared solar.

WAIKOLOA COMMUNITY SOLAR, LLC PICKED TO BUILD COST SAVING SOLAR PROJECTS FOR BIG ISLAND RESIDENTS

WAIKOLOA, March 1, 2023. Waikoloa Community Solar, LLC (WCS) has been selected to build two new shared solar projects in Waikoloa on Hawaii Island. These projects are part of Hawaiian Electric’s Community Based Renewable Energy (CBRE) program that helps any Big Island resident benefit from renewable energy and lower their cost of electricity.

How it Works

Two community solar farms are coming soon in Waikōloa Village. HECO residential and business customers who subscribe benefit from sharing a local solar installation.

  1. Subscribe with Waikōloa Community Solar
We will contact you, once we get HECO and city permits, to subscribe monthly in sharing the solar. Solar subscription size is based on your electricity use. Sign-up is free.
  2. We install the solar
It’s like outsourcing your solar to us. We build 2 shared solar farms in Waikōloa Village and connect them to the power lines.
  3. You save on your monthly electric bill
HECO reduces your bill with a credit from the electricity generated from your part of the solar energy produced, once the shared solar farm is operating. We charge you for the credits at a guaranteed discount.
